Undone In The Garden
The Gospels speak of the passion of Jesus, which is the time when Jesus was betrayed and then comforted.
John 1.1-3
The first words in the book of John pull in creation imagery from the book of Genesis. "In the beginning..."
John 18.1
John writes about his observations in the garden of Gethsemane using creation imagery from Genesis 1:1-2. It starts and stops with a garden. What happens in the first garden is related to what happens in the second garden. Both situations start in darkness:
1. "... the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
2. Nicodemus visited Jesus during the night.
3. Judas goes out into the night to betray Jesus.
4. Jesus is taken down from the cross in the Kidron Valley. Kidron means darkness.
5. Jesus was taken off the cross in the evening or while it was dark.
Adam has his side opened; one of his ribs is removed, and Eve (meaning "life") is created. Genesis 2.8, 21-23
A test of obedience and commitment was presented to the couple, in which they failed, and would impact all of mankind. Sin was introduced into creation. They went outside the bounds set by God. Genesis 3.18
Genesis 3.23.24
As a result of their decision, they received an eviction notice. They can no longer live in the garden. A flaming sword prevented them from re-entering their former home.
Similarly, men and officers from the religious orders attempted to storm the garden using lanterns, torches, and weapons. However, just like the Garden of Eden, there was a force that prevented their actions. They fell backwards and were stopped. John 18:3
Down through history, people would bring more than one sacrifice to the temple, in case one was found to be blemished. If one were blemished, it would not be sacrificed but placed in the courtyard, along with all of the other blemished animals. They were put there because of their intended use as sacrifices to God. They were called living sacrifices.
Jesus bore all the blemishes and brokenness of mankind, therefore becoming a living sacrifice.
Just as Adam's example, Jesus' side was opened, causing a new creation or new life to be established. Remember, any man in Christ is a new creation. Blood and water flowed from Jesus when He was pierced on the cross. Remember, life is in the blood. Living water is water that is moving. Jesus is the second Adam.
In the first Garden, man was made to look like God. In the second garden, God was made to look like man.
